Portions T (Fig. 1, not shown) of tea or other material to be packaged are carried on the underside of the bottom run of a conveyer B by suction applied through spaced groups of orifices H. The material is subsequently enclosed in a tube formed from a web 12 and the tube is then divided into sections each containing one of the portions and having its ends sealed. In the machine described tea is conveyed along a passage 4 to the conveyer by a stream of air evacuated through the holes H and a suction box 5 behind the conveyer. Each heap of tea is levelled by a spinning disc 6 and the heaps of tea subsequently fall on to a partly tubed portion 10 of the web 12 conveyed by a belt 11 which is also troughed. One margin of the tube is then folded over by guides 21, and adhesive is applied to the inside of the remaining margin by a disc 22, the tube is completed by a folding guide 23, and the adhesive is activated by a heater 24. Rollers 27 then seal together opposite walls of the tube, at positions where they have previously been printed with adhesive by a wheel 14. The packets are subsequently cut at 28 from the web. The tea may be fed to the air passage 4 by a vibrating conveyer plate. The longitudinal seam of the tube may be formed by crimping instead of by adhesive.
