Abstract
1,021,988. Diffraction apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 10, 1964 [Dec. 13, 1963], No. 60299/64. Heading H5R. An X- or γ-ray monochromator comprises a single crystal having a slot 14 cut out of it. Spurious components produced within the crystal and resulting from the incidence of a beam of rays on the first reflecting face are removed by reflection at the second face, resulting in almost completely monochromatic radiation in the output beam. The crystal is preferably of brittle material such as germanium or silicon or a plastics material may be used. The slot is cut or etched so that the reflecting faces are parallel to the crystal planes and is not so deep that the reflecting faces are not held fixed parallel relative to one another.
