Abstract

1,021,729. Applying adhesive tape. MIDLAND ENGINEERING & MACHINE CO. April 16, 1964 [May 21, 1963; Jan. 10, 1964], No. 15889/64. Headings B8F and B8G. Apparatus for wrapping a layer of pressure adhesive tape around the perimeter of an article-for example an electrical coil-comprises a rotatable arbor 18 for supporting the article, and a tape feeder 20 adapted to move into contact with the article to apply the tape end T1 thereto and to move away therefrom, as the arbor rotates to wind the tape thereon. The tape is unwound from a reel 27 under an adjustable force exerted by screw 31 and passes via a coder 265 movable by a crank-shaft 285 between ink pad 272 and a pressure block 275, and via pulleys 37-39 to roll 54 mounted on shaft 56 having clutch 55 to allow only forward movement of the tape. Plate 50 of the tape feeder is mounted on crankshaft 70, Fig. 3a (not shown), and is pivotally connected at its base to a lever 80 pivoted at 82 so that on rotation of shaft 70 the tape feeder moves so that a pad 60 of sponge rubber and adjustably mounted on plate 50 applies the tape end to the article. The rotation of the crank-shaft back in the opposite direction causes the arbor to rotate and a wiper 150 to apply pressure to the tape on the article to ensure adhesion of the tape thereto. As the feeder returns to its original position the tape is cut by blade 155. The wrapped article is pushed off spindle 18 by ejector fingers 178, Fig. 7 (not shown). A pneumatic system is described which sequentially operates the various apparatus features. In a modification, wiper 150 is replaced by a wiper blade 304, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), mounted on an arm which is moved by a cam during rotation of the arbor so that the blade engages the article.
