Description

SPECIFICATION A device for welding and cutting a strip of plastics foil The present invention relates to a device for welding and cutting a strip of plastics foil.
The invention provides in or for apparatus for wrapping an article comprising rotatable support means for supporting and rotating an article to be wrapped and means for applying a strip of plastics foil to the article when it is being rotated such that said strip is helically wound on to the article, a device for welding and cutting the strip, said device comprising a welding head mounted at one end of a first lever, piston and cylinder means for moving the welding head by said first lever between an operative and an inoperative condition, and a cutting member carried by a second lever which is pivotally connected to said first lever.
In order that the invention may be well understood an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a device for welding and cutting a strip of plastics foil; and Figure 2 is a plan view of the device of Figure 1.
The device for welding and cutting a strip of plastics foil is generally designated by the reference numeral 1. Means for applying a plastics foil comprises a carriage 2 which is movable in a support (not shown) parallel to a vertical axis of rotation of a support or table means supporting the article to be wrapped. The carriage contains a roll of plastics foil 3 suitably mounted such that it may be fed via a roller 4 and retaining jaws 5 to the article 6 to be wrapped. The article 6 is supported on a table means which is rotatable in the direction of the arrow 7 about a vertical axis to permit a relatively thin strip of plastics foil to be wound in a helical path around the article as the carriage 2 moves vertically relative to the article 6.
Awelding head formed as a bar 8 is connected to one end of an angled first lever 9. The other end of the first lever 9 is pivotally connected to the carriage 2. Piston and cylinder means 10 is mounted on the carriage 2 with the free end of the piston connected to an angle of the first lever 9 such that reciprocation of the piston causes the first lever 9 to rotate backwards and forwards in the directions of the arrow 11 thereby moving the welding bar 8 between an operative and an inoperative condition.
The cutting member is a serrated blade 12 which is fixed to a second lever 13 which is in turn pivotally connected to the first lever 9. The blade 12 is movable towards and away from a cutting position by associated piston and cylinder means 14. The cylinder is mounted on the first lever 9 and the free end of the piston is connected to the second or cutting member lever 13.
A pressure roller 15 is mounted on a lever 17 which is pivotally connected to the angled first lever 9 behind the welding bar 8 such that the roller 15 is biased by spring 17 into contact with the strip of plastics foil so as to press it against the article to be wrapped between the welding bar 8 and the cutting member 12 when the welding bar is in an operative condition. Means are provided to cause the retaining jaws 5 to clamp the strip of plastics foil when the pressure roller 15 is brought into contact with the foil against the article 6 in order to hold the foil 3 taut between the roller 15 and retaining jaws 5 so that the blade 12 may cut cleanly through the foil 3 at an intermediate location.
When the wrapping of an article 6 has been completed the piston and cylinder means 10 are actuated to rotate the angled first lever 9 to bring the welding bar 8 into an operative condition pressing the last layer of foil 3 against a previous layer to which it is to be welded. The pressure roller 15 holds the foil 3 firmly against the article causing the retaining jaws 5 to preventfurtherfoil being suplied.
The piston and cylinder means 14 may then be actuated to cause the cutting member 12 to cut the foil. When the weld is complete the piston and cylinder means 10 move the welding bar 8 into an inoperative condition.
The pressure which the welding bar 8 applies to the foils to be welded together may be preset by varying the stroke of the piston thereby ensuring that a satisfactory weld without holes is achieved.
Since the above described device may be operated automatically it has numerous advantages over hand operated devices. In particular the abovedescribed device maintains a consistent weld quality thus ensuring airtightness and durability of the finished package.
