Abstract

A cationic wax comprises the amidetion product of an oxidation product of polyethylene of molecular weight 500-10,000 and an aliphatic polyamine containing at least 2 amino groups, one of which is a primary or secondary group, a tertiary amine bearing at least one hydroxy group or a condensation product of at least 2 mols of the above aliphatic polyamine and at least 1 mol of a bifunctional bridge member, e.g. a dicarboxylic acid. The amine may be ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine or triethanolamine which may be etherified by condensation with oxalic or formic acids. The wax may be emulsified in water with an emulsifier, e.g. the reaction product of stearic acid and ethylene oxide. The wax may be quaternized with a sulphuric acid ester of an aliphatic alcohol or an alkyl halide.
