Abstract

1,5- or 1,8-diamino-4-hydroxy-anthraquinone and b derivatives thereof are oxidized to give 1,5- or 1,8-diamino-4,8- or 4,5-dihydroxy anthraquinones. The oxidation is carried out in concentrated sulphuric acid or oleum and at temperatures of 0-100 DEG C. Oxidizing agents used are persulphates, chromium trioxide, lead dioxide and manganese dioxide. The oxidation yields in part a quinone imine which is reduced by the addition of a reducing agent, e.g. bisulphite, haloacids or iron to the acid solution. The b substituents include halogen atoms, hydroxy groups, nitro and amino groups, alkyl and alkoxy groups.
