Abstract

1,021,600. Moulding processes. F. S. RAMBLER. Jan. 7, 1965 [Oct. 12, 1964], No. 41616/64. Heading B3F. A method of making a foundry mould comprises producing a moulding paste or slurry by mixing together a comminuted refractory material, an organic silicate which yields silica and an alcohol on hydrolysis, a gelling accelerator and at least sufficient water to hydrolize the silicate, forming it around a pattern and allowing it to gel in contact therewith, removing the mould from the pattern, painting all surfaces of the mould which have not contacted the pattern with beat-resistant material so as to prevent or retard any substantial escape or ignition of alcohol therefrom, and igniting the alcohol escaping from all surfaces of the mould which have contacted the pattern. The heatresistant material may be sodium or potassium silicate, a dispersion of bentonite in water, with or without potassium silicate added thereto, or asbestos powder, powdered firebrick, powdered zircon, alumina, sillimanite, silica, mica, powdered mineral, metal, clay, dispersed in water and/or potassium or sodium silicate or other carrier, or mixtures of the foregoing. The pattern contacting surface of the mould may be coated with a combustible material, e.g. petroleum jelly in paraffin, or wax in carbon tetrachloride, to promote ignition of the alcohol.
