Abstract
<FORM:1021497/C1/1> A flexible glass assembly comprises glass sheet bending means and a flexible strengthened sheet of glass having a predetermined unstressed shape and sufficient elasticity to assume, in cooperation with the sheet bending means, predetermined configurations, the sheet bending means comprising at least one track of predetermined shape different from that of the glass and adapted to engage at least one edge portion of the sheet or a mounting fitted thereon. The sheets may be normally flat or may be pre-stressed to a predetermined curve. As shown in Fig. 1, a car door and window assembly 10 includes a normally flat pane 12 in unstressed condition as indicated at 14 and, extending from the door 20 upwardly are curved tracks 16 which confine the edges of the pane 12 so that when raised by winding mechanism 18, the flexible glass of pane 12 is curved as shown. As shown in Fig. 2, the car door and window assembly 22 include a normally curved pane 24 in unstressed condition and is lowered by winding mechanism 30 to lie between window tracks 26 within the door 28, the pane being stressed into the flat position shown at 32. In place of the double tracks 16 of Fig. 1, a single outer guide track 66, Fig. 5, may be provided against which a member 58, fixed to the leading edge of a pane 60, slides. The member 58 may be shaped as shown and secured with a cushioning gasket 62 or may be cylindrical or may be in the form of a roller. In each case the pane is preferably partly pre-bent, i.e. bent to about half way between the flat and the final curve required. Other embodiments, having curved guide tracks, are for side or rear windows, with the pane disposed in the roof, a display case and an omnibus glass door assembly with sideways slide. The flexible glass sheets are such as may be strengthened by the processes of Specifications 966,731, 966,732 and 966,733 and the types of glass include lithium silicate glasses (including Li-Al-Si; Li-Zr-Si; Li-Ti-Si; Li-B-Si), alkali metal oxide aluminosilicate glass (including Na-Al-Si), alkali metal oxide zirconia silica glasses (including Na-Zr-Si) and alkali metal oxide glasses. The glasses are strengthened by replacing the surface ions in the glass sheet with larger ions to produce compression on the surface.
