Abstract

1,021,303. Purifying exhaust gases; turbines. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Oct. 29, 1964 [Nov. 16, 1963], No. 45341/63 Headings F1B and FIT. Exhaust gases pass through a turbine 25, Fig. 1, driving a compressor 16 which supplies compressed air for mixing with the exhaust gases discharging from the turbine, the mixed gases passing to a purifying device 28, e.g. a catalytic device or after-burner, before passing to atmosphere. In Fig. 1 the turbine and compressor rotors are formed integrally, the exhaust gases flow inwardly through guide vanes 24 and rotor 25 to a mixing chamber 23 for mixing with air from the compressor 16, which air enters the compressor at 21. The purifying device 28 comprises a gauge 29 treated with a catalyst such as palladium, platinum or vanadium pentoxide. In a modification the mixed gases from pipe 27 pass into an afterburner chamber provided with a fuel nozzle and electric igniter. In a further modification the exhaust gases and air from the rotors 25, 16, pass through separate pipes to a mixing chamber adjacent the device 28.
