Abstract

1,099,353. Treating exhaust and crank-case gases. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. April 22, 1965 [April 23, 1964], No.16956/64. Heading FIB. Exhaust gases from a manifold 11 drive a turbine 14 coupled to a compressor 15 which withdraws crank-case gases through a pipe 18 and passes them, via a flame trap 29, to a pipe 20 where they mix with the exhaust gases, the mixture passing to an afterburner 22, via apertures 23, from which purified gases pass to atmosphere via a silencer 26. Additional fuel is either injected into the crank-case gases at 30, or the carburetter is set to provide an over-rich mixture. An air inlet valve 31 for the crank-case is provided. Ignition in the afterburner 22 may be effected by a sparking plug 28 or by a catalyst. Means may be provided to enable the mixture passing to the afterburner 22 to by-pass the jacket between the latter and an outer casing 21. Additional air may be supplied to the crank-case gases before they reach the compressor. The silencer and afterburner assemblies may be combined as a single unit. The turbine 14 may be omitted, the compressor 15 then being driven by the engine.
