Abstract
1,021,260. Projectile fuzes. K. DIEHL. Oct. 8, 1964 [Oct. 15, 1963], No. 41006/64. Heading F3A. An electrical fuze, for projectiles, has as an ignition voltage generator a piezoelectric cell 5, Fig. 1, which is struck by an arm 11 released by a trigger 14, Fig. 2, during acceleration of the projectile. Inertia forces cause the trigger 14 to move downwardly against a spring 21 to release the arm 11 which is swung about a pivot 10 by a spring 16, a hammer 12 striking the cell 5 through a baffle-plate 4 having a sound resistance equal to that of the cell. The electrical charge due to compression of the cell is dissipated through a diode 38 while that of reverse polarity due to expansion is retained. At the end of the period of acceleration, the spring 21 moves the trigger 14 upwardly to release a second arm 24 which is swung about a pivot 23 by a spring 32 to complete an electrical circuit containing the cell, a detonator 79 carried by the arm, and an impact switch 80. If due to a fault, the impact switch is closed before the arm 24 is swung into ignition position contacts 25<SP>1</SP>, 35 discharge the cell. A strap 44 provided with a fastener 45 holds a ball 43 in a notch of the device 14 until the fuze is to be made live. A spring 39 engages a recess 40 to hold the arm 24 in the ignition position. In Fig. 4, a spring- loaded plunger 57 energizes the cell 5 when locking balls 60 are released by an inertia-actuated member 62 while in Fig. 6 energization is provided by a shock wave from a detonator 67 which is punctuated by a firing-pin 70 on discharge. To provide a time delay in operation of the trigger 14, it may carry a spring-loaded member having a pair of fingers to engage a transversely-corrugated pin.
