Abstract

1,021,241. Battery charging systems for vehicles. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Nov. 21, 1962 [Jan. 30, 1962], No. 3411/62. Heading H2H. An electrical system for a vehicle wherein a battery 4 is charged by an alternator 3 over a full-wave rectifier has a series circuit comprising a normally open switch 7, a warning lamp 6 and a resistor 5 connected across the rectifier output terminals, the resistor 5 also being connected across the alternator 3 by means of a half-wave rectifier 8 so that as the alternator is run up to normal speed the lamp 6 is gradually extinguished. In a further embodiment the resistor 5 is connected to the alternator over three rectifiers, one to each output terminal. The resistor 5 may be replaced by a relay winding and the system may be single or polyphase, star or delta connected.
