Abstract

Aqueous lubricant and cutting fluid compositions contain (1) an alkanolamine, (2) a C1- 12 organic acid, and (3) an "alkenyl" succinic acid or anhydride. Either or both of the acids may be present as a salt of the alkanolamine. Typical components (1) are monoethanolamine and methyl diethanolamine, and typical components (2) are heptanoic and undecylenic acids, others being specified in each case. The term "alkenyl" used in component (3) includes radicals obtained by saturating an group with H, Br, Cl, I, or S, typical components (3) being ethyl succinic anhydride, 1,2-diiodotetracosenyl succinic anhydride, and sulphurized octadecenyl succinic acid, many other examples being given. Many optional additives are mentioned, including alkali metal nitrites and hydroxides, sodium mercaptobenzothiazole, phenol, sodium o-phenyl phenate, hexachlorophene, tetrachlorophenol, p-chloro-m-xylenol, boric acid, boron oxides, and sodium salts of E.D.T.A., nitrilotriacetic acid, and diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid.
