Abstract
In a process of refining molten deoxidized carbon steel, 0.1-1 pound of a flux per ton of steel is added to the molten steel, the flux composition comprising by weight: .75-90%.CaF2 .3-8%.NaF .2-20%.LiF The flux is preferably added to the steel during teeming after a cushion of molten steel is formed on the bottom of the mould and the flux addition is completed by the time the mould is three-quarters filled. Silicon or aluminium are used as deoxidizers to form killed or semi killed carbon steel. The flux may be in the form of a powder, granules, briquettes, pellets or as fused bodies.
