Abstract

1,020,851. Vibration dampers. ROVER CO. Ltd. April 10, 1964 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 1308/63- Heading F2S. In means for reducing the vibrations transmitted by an I.C. engine or other machine M through its rubber mountings R to a bracket B on a supporting structure S vibrations, detected by an electromagnetic pick-up G, e.g. a strain gauge, mounted on the bracket B, are amplified and fed to the driving coil C of an electromagnetic force-generating unit U and are of such amplitude and phase as to apply, through a rod D, opposing forces to the bracket B which will substantially cancel out forces transmitted to the bracket B through the mounting R. The coil C is received in an annular gap in a magnet which is suspended on low rate springs L, L from the bracket B, the natural frequency of the springs L, L and the magnet being low in comparison with the frequency of vibrations of the machine M. The strain gauge G may be replaced by a transducer T or T<SP>1</SP> disposed directly between the machine M and the bracket B and the circuit may include frequency selective attenuators. The transducer G could respond to velocity instead of displacement and be fed through an integrating circuit and, if desired, an attenuator to produce a voltage proportional to displacement for feeding to an amplifier connected to the coil C. Circuits are also described which include arrangements where forces 180 degrees out of phase with both displacement and velocity are fed to an amplifier leading to the coil C. In all embodiments the phase and amplitude of the output driving coil C may be made adjustable. In Fig. 9, (not shown), a machine M imparts countervibrations to a support bracket B through a lever W and resilient mounting R<SP>1</SP> the free end of the lever W co-operating with a cam Y rotatable by the machine M driven at the appropriate speed. In an alternative arrangement the lever acts upon a resilient mounting R<SP>1</SP> situated on the same side of the bracket as the resilient mounting R.
