964,937. Measuring unbalance electrically. D. HOFMANN, [trading as GEB. HOFMANN KOMM.- GES.]. July 16,1962 [Oct. 5, 1961], No. 27248/62. Heading G1N. A dynamic balancing machine,particularly for wheels, comprises a shaft 8 mounted on bearings 6,7 connected to a housing 1 through springs 5, a device 9 whereby either bearing can be held rigidly with respect the housing 1, to fix the nodal point of oscillation of the shaft at that bearing, or both bearings can be fixed, a supporting flange for the wheel, which flange is adjustable along the shaft so that one wheel rim may be arranged in the plane perpendicular to the shaft and passing through the nodal point an electromechanical transducer 13 engaging the shaft at a point remote from the bearing and means to receive signals from the transducer resulting from any unbalance in the wheel. Shaft oscillations are picked off by the transducer through a ring 11, the torque on which is taken by a spring rod 15,and are displayed on an indicator 16. The wheel being positioned so that the plane of one rim contains the bearing 7, which is clamped, only the unbalance due to the other rim can create shaft oscillations and that unbalance can be balanced out. By device 9, only bearing 6 is now clamped and the other rim balanced. Both bearings may be clamped for mounting the wheel on the flange and for an initial approximate balancing. Controls 17,18 adjust the resistance systems to suit different wheels.
