Abstract
1,020,578. Ceramic-metal seals. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 19, 1963 [March 22, 1962], No. 10967/62. Heading B3V. [Also in Division H2] In a method of securing a metal fitting to a ceramic article, e.g. an electrical insulator, a resilient sleeve member 13, e.g. of an epoxy resin reinforced with glass fibre, is bonded to an unglazed portion 12 of a ceramic bushing 10, and a heated metal fitting 14 having an annular sleeve 14a is fitted over the sleeve 13 such that upon cooling an interference fit is created between the two sleeves and the sleeve 13 is held radially in compression. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2) a metal fitting 21 is secured to a ceramic bushing 20 by metal clamps 22, each clamp having a bevelled surface 22a which engages a correspondingly bevelled surface 25a of a glass fibre reinforced epoxy resin sleeve 25 bonded to an unglazed portion 26 of the bushing 20. On tightening up the clamps 22 the sleeve 25 is held in compression. A gasket 27 is placed between the bushing 20 and fitting 21.
