Cylinders, construction of, and cooling, - Cylinders are cast and machined separately and then joined together in pairs and fitted with a sheet-steel jacket. which is secured by welding. The cylinders are held together at the bottom by a plate 2, and at the top by a crosshead a with hollow trunnions 4, which are secured in brackets 8 on the cylinders by nuts 6. Long bolts 9 from the crank case hold down the arms 8 of the cross-head and relieve the cylinder walls of some of the stress of the explosion, thus enabling them to be made thinner. The jacket 20 is secured at the base to a flared sheet-steel ring 14 which is embedded in the wall of each cylinder at 13. Where the cylinders are in contact, the rings are flattened, and the part 13 is thinned. Collars or flanged bushes are screwed on to the walls of. or into the aperture in, the cylinder head. and to these the jacket is welded as described in Specification 100,946.
