Abstract

1,020,427. Mechanical seals. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Feb. 19, 1963 [March 1, 1962], No. 6707/63. Heading F2B. In a mechanical seal for a rotary shaft 13 means are provided to prevent " coking " of the sealed fluid escaping between the rubbing contact sealing faces 30 and 31 of the rotatable and non-rotatable sealing rings 16 and 26 respectively. The ring 16 is sealed by packing 25 to a sleeve 17 fixed to the shaft and is urged by a spring 24 into contact with the ring 26 which is secured against rotation in a flange 14 fixed to the shaft housing 11. A collar 21 attached to the sleeve 17 carries driving pins 22 which extend into slots 23 in an exterior 18 of the ring 16. A sleeve 32 press fitted into the flange 14 is sealed to the shaft by a labyrinth seal 34 and has a deflector sleeve 35 which extends with clearances 36 and 37 between the ring 26 and the shaft. To prevent " coking " of the sealed fluid which leaks between the faces 30 and 31, and may be crude oil or sulphur, a second fluid, for example steam or a solvent, is fed to the vicinity of the faces through a bore 38 and clearance 36 and returned through the clearance 37, a groove 42, a passage 43 and a bore 41.
