A spark quenching arrangement for use with a pair of contacts used to interrupt an alternating current comprises a pair of avalanche diodes connected in series back-to-back across the contacts so that upon the recovery voltage exceeding a predetermined value the appropriate one of the diodes breaks down to present a low impedance path between the contacts.
