Abstract
1,019,519. Balancing grinding wheels. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. Jan. 1, 1965 [Jan. 1, 1964], No. 12/64. Heading B3D. [Also in Division F2] A balancing device for the rotor 2 of a grinding wheel assembly comprises two discs 3 each provided with an eccentric balance weight 4 and normally held frictionally clamped against the inner face 17 of a recess in a hub 1 integral with the rotor by a compression spring 11 biasing a short shaft 3 and its end flange 12 rightwards of the Figure, admission of compressed air through a duct 15 in the rotor overcoming the bias of the spring so that the two discs 3 can turn freely relatively to each other and to the hub. With the grinding wheel assembly turning and the discs 3 free to rotate, the discs finally take up such an angular position that the rotor 2 &c. is balanced. The supply of compressed air through the rotor duct 15 is then shut off, so that the spring 11 again clamps the discs 3 against the inner face 17 of the hub recess, to retain them in their balancing positions. Control of the supply of compressed air through the rotor duct 15 is effected automatically by an electric device 21 sensitive to vibrations of a bearing 16 journalling the rotor 2, and operative through an electric unit 22 to actuate an electromagnetic valve 20. When with the electromagnetic valve 20 open and the rotor 2 turning the discs 3 reach their balancing position, cessation of vibration causes the device 21 to close the valve and the discs are held clamped. The control unit 22 may contain an indicator to show the state of balance.
