Abstract
838,383. Gyroscopic apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 28, 1958 [March 5, 1957], No. 6531/58. Class 97(3) In a gyroscope, the rotor is mounted on a ball and socket joint in a rotatable enclosure so as to have at least two degrees of freedom, brake means being provided for securing the ball to the socket to cause the rotor to rotate with the enclosure about the same axis. As shown the rotor has a rim 4 connected by spokes 6, 6a to a ball 5, which is supported by socket members 7, 7a on half-shafts 8, 8a which also support the casing 8. The half-shafts are driven by a motor 13. Drive to the rotor may be by friction, but as it may, in this case, take some time to run up to speed, plungers 14, 14a are provided to rotate with, but to slide within, the halfshafts 8, 8a. Normally, the plungers are held clear of ball 5 by springs 15, 15a, but solenoids 17 are energized to bring the plungers into contact with the ball to drive the rotor until it has run up to speed.
