Abstract

1,019,043. Rocket propellant charges. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. Jan. 30, 1963 [Jan. 30, 1962], No. 3891/63. Heading F3A. The combustion chamber of a rocket motor has a cylindrical wall 1 and contains the propellant grain 2 which has an axial hole of starshaped cross-section. Between the wall 1 and grain 2 there is an annular gap 3 of width such that at a normal temperature the grain can easily be inserted into the combustion chamber and at higher temperatures the grain bears tightly against the wall 1 due to differences in the coefficients of expansion of the grain and wall. Notches 5, 5<SP>1</SP> formed in the grain act as predetermined breaking points. A V-shaped elastic sealing strip 7 is let into a notch 6 opposite the notch 5 so that when the internal pressure causes a crack to form in the grain the two sides of the strip 7 will spread open as the strip is pressed against the wall 1 thus preventing the escape of gas into the gap 3. At each end of the grain the gap 3 is closed by sealing rings which are movable to allow changes in the length of the grain.
