Abstract
855,380. Igniters for rocket motors. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 11, 1959 [Sept. 11, 1958], No. 29137/58. Classes 9(1) and 9(2). An igniter of solid fuel propellants for rocket motors comprises a hollowed head boss 1, forming or carrying a container 5 for igniter composition 4, a bursting disc 8, forming a closure for the container and also separating the composition from the solid fuel, a primary ignition passage 2 in the boss, for securing ignition of the composition by a detonator, and a transfer tube 9, the walls of which extend into the container 5 and are surrounded by the composition, and which opens 10 near one end into the composition near the bursting disc, and communicates at the other end with the primary ignition passage. The passage 2 is normally closed by a blanking plug 3, which is replaced prior to firing by a firing puffer (not shown). The transfer tube 9 has four ports such as that shown at 10. The container 5 has seals 6, 7 fitted which engage with the boss 1. In operation the flame and hot gas from the firing puffer travel through the tube 9 and ports 10 and ignite the composition 4.
