Abstract

A multi-unit pen comprises a body 10 screwed to a cap 12, Figs. 2, 3, 5 and 11, having three spaced longitudinal openings 14, 16, 18 between legs 48 joined by a top bridge portion 46 and having on their insides rails 50 terminating in catches 52. A spacer 32 is inserted between beads 38 on the cap. For each colour, there is provided a cartridge 26, a spring 28 to surround the cartridge, and a plunger 20, which are first assembled together by pushing the upper part of the flexible plastic cartridge over a conical tip 76 of the plunger. The assembly is then inserted through one of the said openings, the spring being retained by the spacer 32. Each plunger is provided with bevelled edges 51 to ride on two of the rails 50, a finger-piece 62, an upper latch surface 60 to engage the catch 52 when in projected position, a surface 55 of an upper lug 54 to engage the bridge when in the retracted position, an intermediate lug 56 which when the plunger is slightly depressed engages the lug 54 of a projected plunger to release it from the latch 52 for spring retraction, and a lower lug 58 to separate and space it from the other plungers. A projected cartridge can thus be retracted either by full projection of another cartridge, or by slight depression of a plunger which is itself retracted again when released.
