Abstract

Photographic material which does not curl either before or after processing comprises a support carrying a silver halide emulsion layer on one side and a water-permeable colloid layer on the other such that, after processing, the tensile forces on the back and front of the support are equal, the backing layer also containing particles of a macromolecular compound which is removed during processing, the compound being present in such an amount that, before processing, the tensile forces on the back and front of the support are equal. The reduction in the tensile forces in the front layers due to removal of silver halide and/ or silver during processing is compensated by the removal of the macromolecular compound from the backing layer. The macromolecular compound may be one which is soluble in acid fixing baths such as vinyl polymers having amino, ancilino, pyridyl, quinolyl, imidazolyl or pyrimidyl groups on the polymer chain, poly (N, N-dialkylaminoalkyl acrylates) or poly [N<SP>1</SP>, N-di (alkylaminoalkoxyalkyl)acrylamides], or one which is soluble in alkaline developer baths such as copolymers of acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumonic, itaconic or citiaconic acids. The polymers may be copolymerized with unsaturated monomers such as styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, acrylic or methacrylic esters, acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. The colloid binder of the backing layer may be gelatin which may be mixed with butadiene/methyl methacrylate copolymer. Other colloids may be used.
