Abstract

1,018,514. Closuring containers. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. March 21, 1963, No. 11337/63. Headings B8C, B8D and B8T. [Also in Division B5] A method of'closing an opening 3 in a plastics container comprises the steps of covering the opening with a plastics lid 4, exerting pressure on the lid and causing rotation of the lid relative to the container so that the heat of friction developed at the surfaces of contact 5 and 6 on the lid and container respectively causes some melting of the material of these surfaces, stopping the rotation, and maintaining the pressure on the lid until the molten material has set. In the embodiment the container is held fixed and rotation of the lid is effected by bringing extensions 12 on a disc 11 attached to a rotating spindle 10, into engagement with lugs 9 formed in a recess 7 in the lid, pressure being applied by an annular elastic element 13 on the disc 11. To ease control of relative rotation and prevent any plastics chippings from entering the container, a thin film of oil is placed between the surfaces 5 and 6 before performing the closing operation.
