Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1018443/C2/1> wherein R1 is a C14-22 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, R2 and R3 are methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl and X is an anion. The compounds are prepared by reacting a p-xylylene dichloride, -bromide or -iodide with a tertiary amine; where X is e.g. sulphate, methosulphate, phosphate, acetate, citrate or tartrate, the halide anion in the compounds so produced is exchanged by known methods.ALSO:A fabric softening process comprises rinsing a fabric, e.g. a cotton fabric in an aqueous solution containing 0.03-0.3%, based on the weight of the fabric, of a compound of formula <FORM:1018443/D1-D2/1> wherein R1 is a C14-22 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, R2 and R3 are methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl and X is an anion such as chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, methosulphate, phosphate, acetate, citrate or tartrate.
