Abstract

Polymers of olefins are made anti-static by incorporation of polyalkylene glycol derivatives of formula (i) R2O(CxH2xO)nR2, wherein x is 2, 3 or 4, n is 1 to 3000 and R2 are saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon or acyl radicals; and/or (ii) R3O(CxH2xO)nR4, wherein x is 2, 3 or 4, n is 1 to 3000, R3 is H or a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon or acyl radical, and R4 is <FORM:1018262/C3/1> wherein m is 1 to 3000, and R5 is hydrocarbon (with the exception of C2 to C4 saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals), -R6CO-or -CO-R6-CO-, wherein R6 is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or is missing. Optionally there may be present (a) derivatives of formula R3O(CxH2xO)nH wherein x is 2, 3 or 4, n is 1 to 3000, and R3 is a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon or acyl radical, and/or (b) polyalkylene glycols of formula R1O(CxH2xO)pR1, wherein x is 2, 3 or 4, p is 11 to 3000 and R1 is H. Lists of the following classes of compounds are given; polyalkylene glycols (e.g. polyethylene glycol-600), polyalkylene glycol diethers (e.g. o ,o 1-triethylene glycol diethyl ether), polyalkylene glycol monoether monoesters (e.g. cetyl, stearyl, and oleyl polyethylene glycol caproates), polyalkylene glycol diesters (e.g. polyethylene glycol dienanthate and dioleate), and compounds having 2 polyalkylene glycol chains (e.g. di(alkylpolyethylene glycol) adipate and sebacate, and di (capryltriethylene glycol) adipate). Many possible mixtures of said glycols and glycol derivatives also are specified and exemplified in Example 12. The specified polymers of olefins are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, polyisobutylene, polystyrene, polybutadiene and copolymers of styrene and butadiene. Optional ingredients are stabilizers, dyes, lubricants, organic and inorganic pigments and fillers; many pigments being exemplified in Example 14. The products find application as conveyer belts and sheet material.
