Abstract

Polyolefines are made antistatic by surface treatment with or incorporation of 0.5-10% of one or more alkylene or polyalkylene glycol monoethers of formula R-O-(CxH2xO)n-H where R is a saturated or unsaturated branched or cyclic alkyl radical, x is 2, 3 or 4 and may be different in the same molecule and n is 1-3,000. The monoethers may be used in admixture with one or more ethylene, propylene or butylene glycols or their polyglycols having a degree of poly addition of 1-3,000 and/or mono- or di-ethers or esters thereof and/or compounds consisting of two or more alkylene and/or polyalkylene glycol chains combined by way of carboxylic, hydroxy- or di-carboxylic acids, or carbonic acid or hydrocarbon radicals (except C2- 4 saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals), the terminal H of which may be replaced wholly or in part by hydrocarbon or acyl radicals. The polyolefines may be derived from ethylene, propylene, a -butylene, butadiene styrene and may be copolymers thereof, e.g. styrene-butadiene and ethylenepropylene. A number of alkyl and cyclic alkyl radicals, R2 above, and also glycol ethers are listed. In examples a treated ethylene-propylene copolymer also contained carbon black as filler, and a treated polybutadiene contained cyclohexyl - 2 - benzothiazylsulphenamide, sulphur, ZnO and carbon black before being vulcanized. The treated polymers may be formed into sheets.
