Abstract
1,018,143. Tubular heat exchangers. NORMAN ISHERWOOD & CO. Ltd. July 1, 1963 [June 30, 1962], No. 25168/62. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger element comprises a fluid passageway, wherein, over the major part of its length between its ends, the passageway is bifurcated and has gills secured to the external surface of the bifurcations. As shown, corrugated gills 19, 20 are secured to the outer edges of bifurcations 17 each comprising a tube of rectangular crosssection, and a common gill 21 is located between and in contact with adjacent surfaces of said tubes. The corresponding ends of the said tubes are located in seats 16a, provided in the ends of connecting sections 16. The other ends of the sections 16 are of semicircular cross-section and fit in complementary relationship into a circular socket formed in a connecting tube 12, the opposite end of which is provided with a terminal spigot 13, also of circular cross-section. Alternative forms of gills shown comprise a single corrugated metal strip 22, the bifurcations passing through suitably positioned pairs of holes punched in the strip (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) and single plates (Fig. 7, not shown) in which slots are punched as described above, but extending from one edge of the plate, the opposite edge being curved. The socket of the connecting tube may be rectangular or cross-shaped (Figs. 9, 10, not shown), the tubes 17 being secured therein by I-shaped or rectangular blocking members 29 or 31. Other embodiments are described wherein the spigot 13 sockets into the base of the adapter, the adapter being formed by two abutting pressed sheet metal sections (Fig. 12, not shown), or comprising a drum shape element (Fig. 13, not shown). A heat exchanger may comprise a plurality of bifurcated elements, their respective ends being connected into upper and lower tanks or headers by means of the terminal spigots 13, these being perhaps twice as long at one end of the element as at the other.
