Abstract

1,018,121. Thrust bearings; lubricating. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 31, 1964 [Feb. 1, 1963], No. 4180/63. Heading F2A. A thrust bearing comprises a fixed portion 12, Fig. 1 (not shown), and a rotatable portion 11 having opposed thrust surfaces at 11a, main oil inlet means admitting oil to the inner circumference of 11a and main oil outlet means for receiving oil from the outer circumference of 11a As shown, the bearing comprises a thrust collar 11 fixed to shaft 10 and a series of segmental stationary thrust pads 12. The thrust collar 11 also has a cylindrical outer guide bearing surface 11b which engages segmental stationary guide bearing pads 13. An oil inlet pipe 24 communicates with annular duct 25. An outlet 25a of duct 25 is arranged adjacent the opposed thrust surfaces at 11a so that on rotation of collar 11, oil passes between the thrust surfaces. The said oil is then passed through ducts 19 in impeller 18 and hence to oil collecting channel 22 formed in a stationary ring 21. Passage 21a connects channel 22 to an oil outlet pipe 26. A labyrinth oil seal 23 is provided between the ring 21 and impeller 18. Further oil is forced from duct 25 through the ducts 20 to lubricate the guide bearing surfaces 11b and 13a. Oil from guide pads 13<SP>1</SP> passes down as shown by the arrows through passages 27 to the inside face of impeller 18 where it is forced by the centrifugal action of ducts 19 to collecting channel 22 and hence to outlet pipe 26.
