Abstract
In the manufacture of glassware such as standard unions or connections for laboratory glassware having tapered surfaces, surface portions of a tubular blank 4 are heated to soften the glass, the blank 4 is rotated in a headstock chuck 2, a tapered roller 21 is fed into engagement with the outer surface to taper the outer surface, the axes of the roller 21 and blank 4 being maintained substantially parallel and subsequently an inner tapered surface is formed by a rolling rod 14 which is moved parallel to the axis of the blank 4 while the axis of the rod is maintained at a desired angle to the axis of the blank. The rod 14 is rollingly mounted on an extension 15a secured <PICT:1017827/C1/1> to one leg of a U-shaped element 15 which is slidably mounted by the other leg in an element 16 mounted in a tailstock chuck 3, the angle of the rod 14 being adjustable by means of a screw 16a passing through the upper ends of the legs of the U-element 15.
