Abstract
1392652 Glass manufacture J SCHILLER KG 13 April 1972 16991/72 Heading C1M In the manufacture of glass articles such as funnels, pipettes or phials having elongate hollow stems, or blanks for such articles, a glass tube 30, of larger diameter than the diameter of the stems required, is clamped at both ends, as in chucks 17, 18, and supported, as by rollers 19, in at least one region along its length and rotated about its axis and while being rotated is softened, as by burners 16, in elongate stem regions on each side of the or each support region until soft enough to be reduced in diameter, traction then being applied to the tube 30 to form stem portions of predetermined length arid diameter and so as to leave end portions 30<SP>1</SP> and a bulb portion 30<SP>11</SP> at the or each support region of predetermined length of the original diameter of the glass tube 30 and after the tube has cooled and set, severing it at locations 31 along its length to produce the articles or blanks having stem portions of the required lengths. As shown, chucks 17, 18 form part of a glass lathe type of apparatus, with the chucks 17, 18 in spindle stocks 11, 12 on a bed 10 movable in opposite directions between abutments 13, 14, the chucks being driven at the same speed and direction by a shaft, not shown, preferably by a continuously variable transmission. A stationary support chuck 15 has at least two support rollers 19 which may be driven in a direction opposite to that of the chucks 17, 18. The rollers 19, Fig. 4, may be supported in the lower half 21 of a chuck 20 to which an upper half 22 is pivoted at 23 with a further roller 24 supported therein, the chuck 20 holding the tube 30 against longitudinal movement, while allowing turning with the chucks 17, 18. An alternative apparatus, particularly for when more than one support region is required, has one spindle stock stationary, with the supports being moved at appropriately lower speeds than the other spindle stock.
