Abstract

The invention relates to a calibration technique in which a glass tube section is heated to a softening temperature, is reshaped to a required dimension and is then allowed to cool. According to the invention the tube section 3 is gripped by rotatable clamps 1 and heated by a device 2. A shaping member 6 is then used to press the softened glass against a calibration surface 4. The surface 4 and member 6 can be moved axially while the tube section 3 is rotated by the clamps 1 so that the surface 4 and member 6 move spirally or helically with respect to the glass. If external calibration is required, the shaping member can be arranged inside the tube section with the calibration surface outside the tube section. The invention makes it possible to calibrate, with acceptable tolerances, glass tube sections having larger diameters than the maximum diameters which can be accurately calibrated using existing methods and equipment. <IMAGE>
