Abstract

A method of checking the progress of a friction welding operation comprises measuring the radiation produced by a bead or beads 4 formed around the periphery of the welded joint of the members P1, P2 being welded and checking the heat radiation produced by the heating of the or each bead during welding as a function of time. Apparatus for use in this method comprises a pyrometer 1 with a lens 2 whose optical axis can be directed towards the or one of the beads and an electronic circuit 7 for comparing, as a function of time, the value of the heat radiation of the bead found by the pyrometer with a predetermined range of values to check whether the value is within or outside the range. <IMAGE>
