Abstract

The quality of a weld (spot weld) is controlled by directing on it a detector of the infrared radiation. An electronic circuit produces a signal proportion to the heating intensity which is compared with a reference signal representing the desired heat input in the weld. A control signal is produced as soon as the measured signal exceeds the reference signal. This system is less complicated than ultrasonic testing; it requires no coupling fluid and can be used for thinner workpieces. It requires no probe which may be damaged by surface roughness and is less complicated than dilatation tests.
