Abstract

1,017,706. Rolling; producing leaf springs. HOESCH A.G. Nov. 27, 1963 [Jan. 25, 1963], No. 46912/63. Headings B3A and B3M. A method of forming a desired contour in a metal strip 11, as, for example, when producing leaf-springs of parabolic shape, comprises passing a horizontal strip between a pair of rolls 2 and 3, one at least of which is vertically adjustable, the position of the movable roll or rolls being controlled by the position of a sensing element 19 moving over a template 18 corresponding to the desired contour, the strip then being rolled to this contour. A carriage 16, clamped at 17 to the strip, moves, with the strip, in guides 16a to thus traverse the template 18 past the element 19. The movement of the sensing element 19 is transmitted to the roll 3 by hydraulic or other suitable means 21 and workpiece stop 12 is provided, and a roller 13 holds the strip clear of roll 2 until rolling commences. The strip 11 is reversed and its other end rolled in order to produce a workpiece tapered at each end. The template 18 may be replaced by a substantially circular cam which is rotated by movement of the strip to allow continuous profiling of a strip.
