Abstract

1,017,592. Flexible tubes. BTR INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 4, 1962 [July 7, 1961], No. 24748/61. Headings F2G and F2P. A corrugated plastic tube 1 has stiffening material 14 possessing strength in the circumferential direction embedded in a resilient, deformable packing material 12 so as to fill the externally concave parts of the tube to support the tube against collapse whilst allowing flexion of at least the internally concave parts of the corrugation. The whole is covered with a wire-braid tube 15. The tube is of helically-corrugated polytetrafluorethylene. The stiffener is a wire 11 covered with a silicone or asbestos packing or with resilient high temperature rubber reinforced with glass. The whole is covered with a stainless steel braid 15 with a layer of material (Fig. 3, not shown), interposed between the braid and the exposed parts of the tube to prevent abrasion. Fig. 1 shows a connector for joining two lengths of the tube comprising a steel sleeve on to which the tubes with flattened corrugations fit externally from either end and butt against a central rib 19. Bared coils of the wire 11 terminate under lips 21 on a ferrule 20 which is swaged around the sleeve 20 to hold the tubes thereon. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates a joint of the kind described in Specification 958,526, attached to the end of a tube by means similar to that described above.
