Abstract

101,689. Coleman, A. B. July 20, 1916. Plates and walls, jointing pipes to. - In the jointing of pipes to tanks or cylinders, a fitting is employed consisting of a short screwed tube a, Fig. 3, formed at one end with a side lip or flange a<1> having on its upper surface a projection a<2>, and at the opposite side with a projection a<3> of the same size as the projection a<2> but flush with the flange a<1>. The wall e, Figs. 1 and 7, of the tank or cylinder is provided with a circular hole f having a notch f' of the same size as the projection a<2> or a<3>, and the tube a is connected to the wall e by first passing the flange a<1> through the hole f at the side opposite the notch f<1>, the tube being inclined for this purpose, then erecting the tube so that the projection a<3> passes through the notch f<1> as shown in Fig. 7, and finally rotating the tube through 180 degrees so as to bring the flange a<1> beneath the notch f<1> with the projection a<2> lying in the notch as shown in Fig. 1; the joint is then completed and made steam and water tight by means of a rubber or like washer b compressed by a nut d, preferably with an interposed conical metallic washer c. The projection a<2> may be of any suitable shape, for example crescent-shaped, as shown in Fig. 8, in which case the projection a<3> and the notch f<1> are varied accordingly. Or, in place of a single projection a<2>, two or more projections may be formed on the flange a', a similar number of projections a' and notches f<1> being also provided.
