Abstract

1,016,703. Bearings. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. April 11, 1963 [April 16, 1962], No. 14700/62. Heading F2A. A fluid bearing for guiding elongate material through a liquid treatment bath comprises a perforated chamber to which pressurized fluid is supplied, the fluid being passed through the perforations to support the material and then being returned to the pressure source. In an embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), a liquid bath 11 has a chamber 12 therein and has strip material 14 passing therethrough. The material passes over a curved perforated surface 13 of the chamber and is supported by pressurized fluid passing through perforations 13A. The fluid is pressurized by a pump 15 which draws it from the bath and through a filter 16, control being effected by a by-pass valve 17. The chamber 12 may be made of metal or plastic and the number and size of the perforations which are adjacent the ends of the chamber may be reduced so as to prevent unnecessary escape of fluid when narrow strip material is being processed.
