Abstract

1,016,573. Heat exchanger tubes; defrosting. UNDEC. Ltd. April 20, 1964 [April 18, 1963], No. 15286/63. Headings F4H and F4S. A heat exchanger tube 10 is filled with a permeable filling comprising a strip, sheet or tubular element of a reticular or cellular character which extends in a continuous manner along the tube and is in contact with the inner surface of the tube. The filler material may comprise expanded metal or a woven or knitted wire cloth with the wire strands soldered to one another and the outer strands of the filling bonded to the tube. In Fig. 1 the filling 11 comprises a tube of woven or knitted wire. The filling in Fig. 3 consists of a strip of the woven or knitted wire wound helically around a mandrel 12. Fig. 4 shows a filling 14 comprising a sheet of the woven or knitted wire wound spirally about the mandrel 12. The mandrel may remain after insertion of the filling or be removed. When the assembly is used for refrigerating purposes the mandrel remains in the tube and may comprise a defrosting element.
