Abstract

<PICT:1016195/C6-C7/1> In an annealing line having a vertical annealing furnace disposed to receive a continuous strip of metal 12, vertically through a seal in the bottom thereof, a non-magnetic roll member 54 is disposed to rotate about its axis beneath said furnace, engaging said strip over at least 90 degrees of its surface, beneath its axis and to deliver said strip vertically into the furnace; and a curved induction heater unit is disposed adjacent said roll member spaced from the surface thereof to provide a predetermined gap therebetween for accommodating said strip as it is engaged by the roll member and raising the temperature of the strip to such a value that it enters the furnace moisture-free. The non-metallic roll-member 54 may be formed of stainless steel, or may comprise a stainless steel core 53 and a surface layer 55 of a softer material, e.g. wood. The inductor unit 72 is formed of a plurality of current carrying, hollow, copper pipes 74-84, disposed substantially parallel to one another in a spaced relation and forming a curved contour, being mounted on parallel flange members 86. The pipes are connected to one another in series relationship by means of copper plates, being connected to a suitable power supply by means of bus-bars, and are cooled by passage of cooling water therethrough. The gap between the roll member 54 and the inductor unit may be varied by moving the parts 138, 140 of the support pedestal relative to one another.
