Abstract

[Also in Divisions B5 and F2] In apparatus for making elongated shapes of plastic materials viz. thermosetting or heat hardenable type containing reinforcing elements of glass fibre, metal wires, strips, angles &c. in which the material C (Fig. 1) is drawn from a heated bath R through a tapered die 23 in which it solidifies, the drawing means comprises a pair of opposed endless track assemblies yieldingly engaged with the work C by pneumatic cylinders and ram assemblies 76, 79. A pair of opposed endless track assemblies for drawing reinforced plastic and like material through a die are yieldingly engaged with the work by a pair of pneumatic cylinder and ram assemblies 76, 79, Fig. 3. Pairs of elongated guide plates 37, Fig. 4, guidingly support pairs of chains 39 carrying cross-connected gripping tread links 41, 43 forming the endless tracks for gripping the work. Each upper and lower conveyer assembly is floatingly mounted on a fixed frame 30 through pairs of parallel links 67, 68 and 74, 75 and are caused to move in unison, symmetrically of the work axis by links 81, 82 coupled to a common slide 83 guided at 84 in the frame 30. The cylinder and ram assemblies 76, 79 are connected at 77, 80 between the upper and lower pairs of guide frame plates 37. The endless conveyers are driven through sprocket wheels 51 mounted at one end of each conveyer assembly driven from a motor 86 through chain drives comprising a pair of contra-rotating sprockets 99, 100 so disposed on lines parallel to the links 67, 74 and at distances equal to the lengths of the links so that the chain drives 103, 104 are not affected by movement of the guide plates 37. A differential device 93 (see Division F2) is incorporated in the drive to balance out the load between the chains. The conveyer links are guided at the opposite ends of the guide plates 37 by adjustably mounted guide shoes 62 bolted as at 63, 64, Fig. 10, and movable endwise for chain tensioning by a grub screw 66. The guide shoes 62 are of irregular form having separate portions 62a, 62b, 62c of different radii which operate to take up the fluctuating changes in chain slackness which occur as the links pass between the guide plate 37 and the driving sprocket 51. The gripping tread links 41, 43 arranged across the chains have chain link engaging lugs 41a, 41b of different widths at opposite ends for engagement between alternatively disposed outer and inner links 39 of the chains. With each pair of chains arranged in staggered relationship a single form of tread link 41, 43 may therefor be used.
