Abstract

1,015,882. Separating particles from gases. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 10, 1964 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 1338/63. Heading B1T. An apparatus for separating particles from a gaseous fluid comprises an orifice and an adjacent particle collector, so arranged that a portion of a fluid passing through the orifice enters the collector. The apparatus is intended for atmospheric sampling of particle sizes. Air enters through an orifice 5 in a plate 2, and a portion of it (e.g. 1%) enters the collector 3 and leaves via a filter paper 9, rejoining the air which by-passed the collector, and thence flowing with it through a duct 11. The size of particle collected is influenced by the diameter ratio of the orifice and collector inlet, and their spacing. Thus, a series of devices as shown may be coupled together, each orifice plate being placed immediately downstream of the point where the flows of the previous device are united, thereby obtaining size graded samples, Fig. 3 (not shown). The orifice and inlet may be narrow slots, or a series of annular openings to a plurality of collectors may be arranged downstream of a circular orifice.
