Abstract
Compositions for use in making pressuresensitive transfer sheets (see Division D2) comprise: (Example 1) ethylcellulose, mineral oil, oleic acid, black dyestuff and toluol; (Example 3) polyvinyl butyral, chlorinated polyphenyl resin, nigrosine, magnetic iron oxide and methanol; and (Example 4) styrene copolymer, beeswax, carbon black, graphite and petroleum naphtha.ALSO:A pressure-sensitive transfer sheet comprises a foundation sheet, a transferable colour-forming coating covering a portion of one surface of the sheet so as to leave marginal edge portions entirely free of the transfer coating, and a protecting coating superposed over the transfer coating, transferable therewith and extending on to the transfer-free marginal portions to cover the transfer layer completely and seal its edges. The transfer coating comprises the residue of a volatile-solvent-applied layer of synthetic film-forming binder material and imaging material and is printed on to the foundation sheet as a layer including a volatile solvent, which is then evaporated off. The foundation sheet may be of paper or of polyethylene terephthalate. The imaging material may be a conventional hectographic dyestuff, a colour-forming colourless dye component or complementary chemical reagent, or a pigment that is sensible magnetically, electrically or optically, e.g. magnetic iron oxide, iron filings, iron powder, silver powder, carbon black, graphite or nigrosine. It must be insoluble in the solvent used to apply the composition. The binder may be methyl-cellulose, ethyl-cellulose, carboxymethyl-cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymers, alcohol-soluble polyamides, chlorinated polyphenyls, rosin-maleic resins or styrene homopolymers and copolymers. The transfer layer may also contain one or more oils, oily materials or waxes. Preferably, two oils are used of which one is and one is not a solvent for or soluble in the binder. Examples are mineral oil and oleic acid or beeswax. The protecting coating may be of wax and may be applied as a hot melt. The transfer sheets of the invention can also be used in thermography and xerography.
