Abstract

A variable displacement motor or pump, e.g. driven by a turbine, comprises a cylinder block 100 rotatably mounted on a valve plate 62 which slidably engages an arcuate housing face 71 for angular adjustment of the block and valve plate assembly relative to a drive shaft 11, hydraulic balancing being such that the block and valve plate are biased towards the housing face. In the Figs 2 and 4 embodiment, valve plate 62 is supported in housing tracks 69 by balls 63 lubricated by the inlet or outlet kidney ports 80, 81 through passages 85. Balls 63 may be mounted in housing face bores 74, Fig. 5, with shims 75 to take up sideways play in the valve plate. Spring washers on block support spindle 66 effect initial biasing of the block. In the Fig. 7 embodiment, initial biasing of the valve plate is effected by spring assemblies 415, and the valve plate is slidably located on the housing by a key 367 slidable in a keyway 369. Tilting of the block and valve plate assembly is effected by a piston and cylinder 59 positioned centrally or offset. The block and valve plate assembly may be tiltable about an axis above or below the drive shaft axis, so as to be biased towards either the maximum or minimum displacement positions, the tilting range also being sufficient to effect reversal of flow. Hydraulic biasing between the block and valve plate assembly and the housing is achieved by suitable dimensioning of lands 109, 113 and the cylinder ports. For synchronized rotation, block 100 has a ring gear 146 engaging teeth 147 in drive shaft flange 140. The thrust bearing assembly 165, Fig. 2, between the drive flange and the housing, comprises a spider with radial slots housing roller bearings 167 and ball bearings 182 held in place by a press fitted ring.
