Abstract

1,014,951. Gas washers. JONES & LAUGHLIN STEEL CORPORATION. April 18, 1963 [May 2, 1962], No. 15417/63. Heading B1R. A gas washer comprises a cylindrical duct 2 through which gas to be washed is passed downwardly and which has a plate 17 with an orifice 18 the free area of the orifice for the passage of gas and washing liquid introduced into the gas in a transverse direction at a point above the plate 17 being controlled by a wedge 30 rotatably mounted on a shaft extending diametrically across the duct. The wedge 30 is preferably a cylindrical wedge with plane sides and is so dimensioned and positioned that the thick end of the wedge can pass into the orifice. The lower end of the duct 2 is surrounded by a wider cylindrical casing and the washed gas is withdrawn from the annular space between the duct and the casing.
