Abstract

<PICT:1014773/C6-C7/1> In a method and apparatus for removing gaseous impurities from molten metal, particularly steel, the latter is allowed to fall freely through a non-oxidizing atmosphere initially substantially free of the impurities to be removed, the metal stream being broken up by a plurality of jets of non-oxidizing gas arranged in annular configuration round the stream. The gas may be inert to the molten metal, e.g. argon or helium, or may be reactive therewith, e.g. nitrogen. As illustrated there is attached directly to ladle 20 an annular atomizing device 12 which comprises a high pressure gas chamber 13, discharging through downwardly slanting nozzles 18, and a cooling chamber 15. Molten metal is discharged through the atomizing device, and the resultant fine droplets are collected in tundish 22, contact with air being prevented by hood 23; tundish 22 is attached to the cover 26 of ingot mould whereby the metal is cast under a low pressure of gas of inert gas supplied and discharged through pipes 28 and 29 respectively.
