Abstract

In a stentering machine the pins or hooks which engage the margins of the fabric are formed on endless flexible metal bands e.g. of spring steel, which as shown have teeth formed on an edge thereof and pass about drums 13a, 13b diverging as they pass through channel shaped guides 15a, 156. The fabric F which before contacting the pins passes about rotating rods 43, 44 having oppositely directed threaded portions to uncurl the edges of the fabric, is brushed on to the stenter pins by freely rotating brushes 47a, 47b. Leaving this zone the bands are turned in a horizontal plane by suitably shaped channel guides 19a, 19b to further stretch the fabric and become disposed in the same plane as the fabric. The bands and fabric then pass through a heated calendering device 21 comprising two cylinder and blanket arrangements 22, 23 and 25,26. The fabric then passes over a cooler 31 and is lifted from the pins by ploughs 32 to be wound or folded. The bands return via guide rollers to the drums 13a, 13b. Devices 5Qa, 50b each having a pair of micro-switches operated by edge feelers, sense the position of the fabric as it enters the stenter and motors 64a,66b are operated to shift blocks 66a, 66b on which the drums 13a, 13b are mounted in a corrective manner. Rotating threaded rods are associated with each sensing device to ensure that the edges of the fabric remain uncurled. The guide guides l9a, l9b are mounted on an oppositely threaded rod 68 which may be rotated by a handle 69 so that the width to which the fabric is stretched may be adjusted. In a further embodiment the bands 11a, 11b have fabric gripping hooks pressed out from the sides thereof and in this case the fabric may be fed to the bands while they lie in an horizontal plane.
